Understanding what your child experiences…

Have you been frustrated trying to understand when two or more people are talking at the same time?

Some children battle this every day at school. Some of them can get mis-labelled as Oppositional/Defiant, School Phobic or are put into behavioural programs but they are suffering from spoken language processing difficulties.

Have you ever been irritated when the picture from your good video camera is not showing clearly on the TV screen no matter what controls you adjust?

Some children have this experience trying to work out what is written on the board or in their books.  These children are often labelled lazy, with poor concentration, ADD/D, ASD when their difficulties are really due to poor visual perception.

Have you ever had to write with your non-dominant hand? Just try it for a little while and see how slow it is and how much effort and coordination you need just for one or two letters?

When the parts of the brain required for reading and comprehension are not integrated, not networking efficiently with split second timing, it is hard to read or understand. We say this is poor integration of the "reading” brain.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant for a quiet meal but the band is playing loud dance music and prevents you from hearing yourself speak?  You have to work really hard to concentrate on what you are saying?

When some children are asked to read (or do most things) there is "brain noise” interference. These children often can’t start, concentrate on, or finish tasks, including reading and writing. They can often become anxious or depressed about their progress. We say their brain functioning is "overloaded”

Trying to understand what your child is coping with, helps to understand their behaviour.  Knowing what they are coping with means that something can be done about it.
